All about mrs. Dubose
Ms. Dubose was a lady all of the children in Maycomb despise. She was sick, and yelled at the children. She was addicted to morphine and was trying to quit before she died. "According to her views she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I knew." said Atticus. When she did die, Atticus told Jem and Scout why she was so cranky all of the time. When telling Jem how she really was, Atticus described her as "Conscious" he smiled, "and cantankerous." If you knew her before she got sick, she must have been really nice, since Atticus described her so well. We think she really liked some of the children in town, because of she really hated all of them, she wouldn't have had Jem come and read to her.
Mrs. Dubose's Symbol
We think that this heart symbolizes Mrs. Dubose because she is very strong on what her beliefs are even though they may not be the nicest things. For example, when Scout comes into town and says hello to Mrs. Dubose and she yells back say that she is a rotten kid.It also symbolizes her because she is loving and forgiving. For example when Jem cut down her camellias with Scout's toy she forgave him but he had to read to her everyday for a month so she could stop taking her pills so she could die free. Finally she is a strong woman to stop her addiction before she dies. It takes a lot to get rid of something that she has had a lot. That is why this heart is a symbol for Mrs. Dubose.
